First Day of Qualifying Complete, Local Wild Card Tsai Defeated
Local wild card entrant and member of the Wake Forest University men’s tennis team Alex Tsai (USA) was defeated by Harel Srugo of Israel 6-1, 6-1. Srugo was the #1 singles player for UCLA during the 2007/2008 season.
In other action, Evan King defeated wild card Spencer Papa in the most competitive match of the day, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. King, 20, was the Big 10 Athlete of the Year for Michigan in 2012, and has been named to the All Big 10 team 3 times.
Mitchell Frank (USA) defeated Derek DiFazio (USA) 6-2, 6-2. Frank just completed his freshman year at the University of Virginia, where he was named the #1 singles player in Division 1 tennis.
Fritz Wolmarans (RSA) defeated wild card Krasimir Kolev (USA) 6-2, 6-1. Wolmarans has played for the South African Davis Cup team and is currently ranked 510 in the world. In October 2011 he reached his best ATP ranking of 198.
Andrew Carter (USA) easily defeated wild card Robert Jakubik (USA). Carter, of the University of Louisville, was the number 1 ranked player in North Carolina under 18’s in 2007.
Maciek Sykut (USA) defeated Shaun Bernstein (USA) 6-3, 6-4. Sykut, 26, was born in Poland and now resides in Florida. He is a former Florida State Seminole.
Michael Venus (NZL) won easily over Anthony Assal (USA) 6-0, 6-0. Venus, 24, played tennis at LSU, where in 2009 he was named SEC Player of the Year, and that same year was named an ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) All American.
In the final match of the day, Patrick Daciek (USA) defeated wild card Azizbek Makhkamov (UZB) 6-3, 6-1. Daciek played collegiate tennis at Virginia Tech, where he played in the #2 singles position during the 2010/11 season.
